Part-time Research Associate
"Network and Systems support for Interactive Pervasive Environments
"

£23,002 – £26,666 pro-rata (part-time post, 50%)

Closing Date: 7 October 2007

Applications are invited for a part-time research position available in the Computing Department at Lancaster University, in the general area of networked systems support for pervasive computing. We are looking for an enthusiastic researcher to contribute to our research on devices and systems support for interactive pervasive sensing systems, as part of the EPSRC funded NEMO project.

As the application of pervasive computing becomes commonplace, increasingly challenging requirements are placed upon underlying network technologies, in terms of energy efficiency, throughput, and response time. We are increasingly finding humans ‘in the loop’ of many pervasive applications, and so reducing network latency whilst maintaining energy efficiency can be paramount. Our research in this area focuses upon the research and development of devices, platforms and protocols to address the performance requirements of interactive pervasive applications.
We invite applications from individuals with prior research experience and/or a higher degree in computing or a related field, ideally with prior experience in the field of embedded networked systems. The post requires very good programming and system prototyping skills, with experience of modern embedded platforms and wireless technologies. Experience of hardware development is also strongly preferred. It will involve participation in an active research group, so very good communication skills and a genuine interest in collaborative research are highly desirable. The Computing Department offers a highly collegiate and stimulating environment for research career development. The successful candidate will join a research team that is internationally recognized and has close links to other leading groups world-wide. The post is available from November 2007 or later, for 12 months in the first instance, with intention for further extension.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact Joe Finney (joe@comp.lancs.ac.uk) with a brief email note on their interest in this position, to initiate informal discussion.
